Wrapped Up in Books

Three thrilling books from my love Pete and his love Powells! Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer; Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson; My Dog Does My Homework by poets like Shel Silverstein. Oh boy, what excitement! To find out more about my book obsessions, follow me on Goodreads.

SAY Yes soccer

When one of our students brought a new soccer ball to afterschool on Wednesday, all the kids begged to play. Chris obligingly set up a game, only to discover that not a single one of the nine kids present knew how to play. We went from the mad scramble of free-range soccer to a very organized chalk circle system where we practiced kicking and passing both to teammates and into the goal. No matter how we played, helping the kids navigate this sport for the first time proved incredibly entertaining!

The End.

Technically our LOST finale party isn't until tomorrow night, but Brianne invited me and Luke over to watch it tonight if we wanted. We did want, and maybe Luke went, but I ended up sorting shelves in the Sunday school closet instead. While the rest of the world is in shock and awe (I hope) over the show's revelations, the most exciting discovery of my night was finding a package of shrinky-dink left over from last summer. I can deal with that. Just so long as my face looks like this when I finally see the finale.

EDIT 5/24: Nope. My LOST finale face was, overall, much closer to this.

Except, you know, with the TV instead of a dress.

Maybe I would have been happier with the dress.

Must be the colors and the kids

Within the last hour, I’ve been struck by the uniqueness of my current situation here; the blessing of it; how much I’m going to miss it. It started as I leaned against the kitchen doorframe, pizza crust in hand, leisurely watching the boisterous game of Monkey in the Middle taking place before me. “Ms Rachel, come play!” called one of the kids. I laughed and shook my head, indicating the unfinished pizza. But for the first time, I realized how much I’m going to miss having a job that lets me play Monkey in the Middle every day with twelve elementary school kids and three of my best friends.

The game didn’t end until the second-to-last kid left. Then Rodrigo, one of our newer first graders, continued to lob the Bulbasaur plushie back and forth with Mr Chris. “I’m the only kid here!” he exclaimed enthusiastically. “I’m so lucky today!” He kept saying that: as he and Chris played catch; as he helped us clean up; as we huddled around the couches for a game of Break the Ice. “I’m here so late today! I’m so lucky, right, Ms Rachels?” Every time he said it, I remembered how my clothes were still soaked from walking a total mile to and from school with two trips of kids. I remembered how one of my arms was so much wetter than the other, because it's the one that had been holding the hand of a child instead of an umbrella. I kept watching Rodrigo's toothless grin. “So are we,” I always answered.

Eventually his dad came, and I trailed Chris with a Christian magazine from the mail, making fun of certain titles and expressing interest in others. Dion was there, too, singing softly to himself near the piano when he wasn’t with us. Outside, the mechanical whir of a water machine reminded us of teasing Jorge, cleaning in the rain. I pulled open the fridge door and prepared dinner for me and Luke: vegetarian baked zita, made just for me and Lindsay at the youth group fundraiser last Friday. All of us left were laughing. It’d been a long, wet, dark day outside, and we were sarcastic but pretty happy. Pretty content. And I realized how wonderful all of that is.

PS I've now referenced this beautiful song twice in two weeks, so if anyone's interested, here's a video with lyrics listed.

I ACTUALLY SAW JEFF MANGUM PERFORM

And The Clean, and Yo La Tengo again, and Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields, and Sharon Von Etten, and Portastatic, and Dimmer, and Kyp Malone, and Coasting, and a couple comedians, and the Kilgour brothers all over the place, and and and...

Oh man. I am not at all ashamed to say I was openly weeping.

So much love.

BrooklynVegan has an excellent summary of the whole night, plus a collection of bootlegged Mangum videos, here.

Today I gave five two-year-olds their yogurt - on the floor so nobody would fall from the table - while I took the lone three-year-old around the corner to the bathroom. We were only gone a minute or two, but when we got back, the two-year-olds had made a yogurt slip-n-slide on the kitchen floor. All of the yogurt had been dumped out, and the kids were taking turns running and wiping out on the mess. Ingenious, but really hard to clean up in a house that doesn't stock paper towels for environmental reasons.

Antics

A couple of our kids found a trail of ants in the church basement. They created a funny game to see who could collect the most ants in a styrofoam cup - a game that occupied them for nearly 45 minutes!

Adventures in free gifts

Most of the kids we work with have parents in the service industry. Cooks, nail technicians, hotel maids. What's amazing is how generous many of these parents are, and perfectly God uses them to provide for our needs as a church and as individuals. Sometimes it's clothes at just the right time, or computer charges that miraculously fit ours. Mostly, though, it's food. And that's wonderful - it's by far our most pressing daily need. But often, it's not what we would have chosen ourselves. There's a beauty in that - in stretching ourselves to receive the gifts God gives us, and realizing, once again, it's always enough.

One Sunday school parent is especially kind in dropping by with food for me and Luke. Her husband is a sushi chef at a local restaurant, so that's what she usually gives us. We've also received individually wrapped Uncrustables PB&J sandwiches, salad dressing, and chocolate chips from her. Very eclectic! The sushi is the most regular, though, and it's been an adventure trying each variety she brings. I'm vegetarian - occasionally vegan - but when free food arrives and no other option is immediately available, I can't be too picky.

Send Sara!

My little sister Sara is wonderful, and she's trying to get to Haiti. Please read her prayer letter and join her ministry in whatever way possible!
Dear loved ones,

As (hopefully) all of you know, on January 12th a massive earthquake rocked the Caribbean island of Haiti. Since then, the Haitian Government has reported that as many as 230,000 people have been identified as dead, 300,000 injured, an estimated 1,000,000 homeless, and even more displaced... ultimately affecting at least 3 million people.

I cannot even begin to imagine what life is like for people there, for the newly orphaned and the freshly widowed, for the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere who had nothing and now has even less. With the more recent earthquakes in Chile and Japan and all the other problems going around, it seems catastrophe is striking just about everywhere right now. So often when we hear about these things, we don't know how to help.

I have been presented with a unique opportunity to actually go and work with Youth with a Mission (YWAM), one of the most structured relief efforts currently operating in Haiti right now.... Meaning that in four weeks, less than three months after this catastrophe, I will have the privilege of being with these people as well as their neighbors in the Dominican, partnering with the community and serving them in any way I'm able!

I am SO excited to see what God is doing in Haiti and to help with all the things that are already started there! In order to do that, I must humbly ask for your partnership, through prayer or financial contributions. The money will cover both the two and a half months I'll spend in Haiti/Dominican Republic as well as the three months in Los Angeles - where I'm currently enrolled in a Discipleship Training School with YWAM. Right now I'm learning from different speakers every week and meeting the community's needs in various ways, including mentoring and tutoring at-risk kids in a bootcamp run by the LAPD, hosting Human Trafficking Awareness nights at local cafes, serving in homeless shelters, and much more.

The two months I've spent training have been amazing, and I have a gazillion stories I would love to share with you if you'd like to hear them! For now, though, I'm looking forward to this final month in L.A., and then my time ministering in Haiti! In order for this to actually happen, I have to raise $4,000 in the next three weeks! It's a crazy amount, but God has already made it so clear that I'm supposed to be here - so I know that no matter what the number may be, God will provide and the goal will be reached. If you feel like God is leading you to help me in this ministry, please make out a check to Sara Owens or Youth With A Mission and mail it to:

If you would like to know more or have any questions (or just want to say hey!), please feel free to e-mail me at: of.trees.and.seas@gmail.com. I would love to hear how you're doing and what you're up to, or even if I can help or pray for you in any way! (Really - I legitimately mean that for every single person who's reading this!)

Balloon Babies

This weekend, our little family has gotten bigger. Luke and I have adopted ten balloon children to take care of until the end of SAY Yes training. As instructed, we each replicated, with balloons, five children we interact with on a regular basis. These "kids" have to go everywhere we go for the duration of our training: on the subway, in the streets, at church. We can't tie them together or stick them in a bag. During our SAY Yes training sessions, unattended children may even be kidnapped or run away! Needless to say, we've got our hands full with ten light-headed balloon babies to look after!

Won't You Celebrate With Me?

One of my favorite poets in the world died last week. Lucille Clifton was a woman of extraordinary strength, honesty, and discernment. If you'd like to know more about her life and work, the New Yorker blog has a wonderful tribute.

Blizzard!

Yesterday it snowed nonstop from 12am to 11pm! Wind and sleet kept the accumulation down at first, but by evening the quiet, blanketed streets were a genuine winter wonderland! School was canceled, of course, but work continued at church; the blessing/curse of living next-door!

Luke and I met with Pastor Doug, as usual, in the morning, and when he went home for lunch, we braved the blizzard to buy groceries. That night, we, the Ws, and the Ks trooped over to Nick's for our second LOST party. Irene brought homemade pasta and garlic bread, and we cuddled up inside, watching cable for a couple hours before returning to the wintry scene outside. Immediately Chris and Irene began a snowball fight, drawing in two neighborhood boys we'd never seen before. We only live a block and a half from Nick's but we all reached home drenched and laughing.
It reminds me of my first winter here, almost exactly seven years ago (February, 2003). Four of us came from First Free, St Louis, on a "vision trip" for a friend who would later serve as a missionary at First Free, Brooklyn. We were scheduled to stay only one long weekend, but a blizzard grounded our flight for three extra days! I missed my high school mock trial competition, but enjoyed seeing this new season play out in Brooklyn.

Happy birthday Luke!

My baby brother is 20!

Unfortunately, he's also sick. He had to leave afterschool early yesterday, miss our LOST premiere party last night, and stay in bed sleeping literally all day today. Please pray for a quick recovery for the beloved birthday boy!

Strange Fruit in February

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
